FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q: What's the point of having a website for the Chapel - we have managed without before?

A: There are two main benefits to doing this - the first being that people looking for a church are likely to do so via the Internet.  Secondly, people who see www.suttonvillagechurch.co.uk on the new noticeboard or other places, can see what is going on in the fellowship in a non-threatening way, and then maybe be encouraged to visit us!!!

Q: Why can't I find us using a search engine?

A: It takes time to filter through - unless you fork out for it!!!  Currently I have Keywords in Meta-tag form for some of the clever search engines.  I have registered with some of the others (using the free service).  Try typing in the following string:-

"Churches"+"St Helens"+Sutton

This will probably display a link to http://www.shine.org.uk/sutton.htmShine have kindly agreed to put a direct link to our site  (and vice versa).  We are not the first church in Sutton to have a site - click here for more....

Q: Who's responsible for the site?

A: WE ALL ARE!!!!  Neil is doing all the donkey-work, but hopes that we will all consider things that we can contribute!  Pictures, Text, ANYTHING!  In particular, we can use up to 10 sub-domains (the first of which - kids, is now set up) which could be hosted by other people if they fancy having a go!!!  I also have 50 e-mail aliases to give out - reserving them to church officers at the moment (or anyone who bribes me).  I am looking for someone to handle Prayer Requests.

Nothing is set in stone!  I am constantly updating so keep checking back to see what's new!

Q: How can I write a page?

A: Neil can convert Text and Piccies from most formats into HTML code.  He used to write the code from scratch, but he's got lazy now he's in his 30's and uses an editor - usually Microsoft FrontPage 2000 - this comes with Microsoft Office.   A good free one is "Netscape Composer" - which comes with the Netscape Browser!

Remember this - HTML IS NOT a programming language - in many ways, it's no more difficult than writing a letter!

HTML is the "code" that a browser (ie, what you are viewing this page with) interprets.  It looks like this!

<p><font face="Arial" color="#0000FF"><b>Suttonvillagechurch.co.uk</b></font></p>   - Producing text in a certain font, to be blue
<p><img border="0" src="colours.gif" width="750" height="3"></p> - Adding a picture...
<p><font face="Arial"><a href="indexhs.htm">Return to index</a></font></p>   - A hyperlink to another page

You will probably never need to see it though!

Having said that - I am trying to keep everything looking fairly uniform.  I can provide a template if necessary.

Q: So does that mean that Neil's computer has to be on all the time!

A: It usually is, but not for that reason!  It's hosted by his ISP - on their web server!!!!  The Domain-name (the only bit I've had to pay for - so far...) is ours, and expires in Sept 2005.  Anybody who got free webspace with their ISP (10Mb is usually the norm) can host bits if they want!!
