On Sunday 18th December we hosted our annual Friday Club Christmas party followed by the nativity service. The party started at 2pm when over 50 children arrived at Sutton Village Church. We had one final rehearsal of the performance. We then played games and had the obligatory “pass the parcel” before moving to the club room upstairs for some party food.
We just had time to clear away plates and cups before we heard that a very special visitor had arrived early. He had parked his sledge in Herbert Street and made his way up to the club room with a present for every child.
No sooner had we sung Jingle Bells as Santa left and it was time for the children to get changed into their costumes in readiness to
perform this year’s nativity to a packed church. Just as there was no room at the inn, there was only standing room left as over 100 proud parents, relatives and friends packed into the church.
The service commenced at 6pm with a welcome from Rob, SVC worship leader, and a prayer from Jean, one of the SVC ministers. The children gathered on stage as the congregation sang Silent night. Then we were on and the children performed their take on the nativity with a running commentary from the narrators, drama and songs.
The finale was greeted with rapturous applause and the children of Friday Club had another successful performance to look back on with fond memories.
Many people were happy to stay behind to enjoy a hot drink and demolish a mountain of mince pies after the service had finished. It was great to share with families and friends alike in that very special atmosphere.
Friday club is for children in school year 1 through to year 6. It is held every Friday during school terms from 6.45pm to 8.15pm. The subs are just £1 and this includes a drink during the evening and a snack to take home.
